Fighting Burns
About this desk
Fighting Burns is an editorial desk on fire prevention, home safety and burn care, written in American English for households, volunteers and the fire service.
What this desk publishes
Fighting Burns is an editorial desk on fire prevention, home safety and burn care. It explains how a home fire starts, the checks and habits that keep one from starting, the first minutes after a burn, and how skin heals over the months that follow. The work is arranged in four sections: Fire Prevention, Burn Care and Recovery, Home Safety, and the Firefighter Community. Every entry answers one reader question, gives the answer first, names the sources it read, and carries the date it was last checked.
Who writes it
The desk of Fighting Burns writes and edits every entry. It reads published fire service material, safety standards, burn unit patient guidance and clinical reviews, then states what those sources say. Crews, hospitals, agencies and programmes are described in the third person. Where sources disagree, the entry gives both readings and says which one is more common.
How an entry is made
An entry begins with one question a household would really ask. The desk gathers the published sources, names each one it read, and writes the answer in plain American English. Numbers appear only when a source gives them. Each entry carries its date, and when a source changes the entry is read again and the date is updated.
Photographs
Each entry carries a generated photograph made for that entry and captioned as an illustration. The pictures show the scene the entry describes: a kitchen, a hallway, a station bay, a stairwell, a burn unit corridor. They are illustrations, not records of a particular incident or a particular place.
